What is a Patent?

A Patent awards rights to the owner of a patent worthy invention. A patent holder, “is entitled to prevent anyone else from exploiting without his permission… the invention for which the patent was granted” (Section 49 of the Patent Law, 5727-1967) and ownership is both territorial and limited to a nonexpendable period of 20 years.

A patent worthy invention as defined by Section 3 of the Patent Law is an invention, whether it be a product or a process in any technological field, that can be used for industrial purposes and has inventive progress.
